In the Bible, in the old testament or Torah;  there was a great war between God and Samael or Lucifer (Lucifer was his name after he fell).  Samael was the favorite of Gods angles and the most beautiful.  According to scripture St. Micheal lead the army of God against the uprising angles.  Samael was cast from heaven and sent to be the ruler of Hell.  Since that time Satan has been raging a war against man kind.  Mankind has always had something that angles can never have.  Free will, creation in God's likeness, and mortality with the promise of redemption in the afterlife.  Because of this the fallen angles (demons) wage an epic war against man.  Our only salvation and fortification is our faith in God.  Our free will allows us to resist the demons and also makes us vulnerable to attacks.  Our gift of free will is a double edged sword however it is up to us to live a righteous life within the limits in which God set for us.
