There are basically two ways that a demon can attach itself to you or your family.  There is the Law of Attraction and the Law of Invitation.  This segment is dedicated to the Law of Attraction.   The Law of Attraction simply put is the way in which a person attracts a demonic entity to ones self.  There are various ways in which a person can attract a demon.  Namely by committing mortal sins.  Usually serious ones and in combination with a lack of real faith in God.  Prostitutes and those involved in other un-Godly enterprises are uniquely  vulnerable to demonic influence.  Alcoholics and drug addicts are also very vulnerable because of there depleted mental status.  Also people who are dubbed as mentally incompetent can experience a certain degree of demonic influence.  Unfortunately in these cases, it is difficult to discern because of the depleted mental capacity of the subject.  However there are documented cases of people who are mentally deficient who have been attacked.  People will normally attract demonic spirits when one of two things happen; first they are in danger from the first set of circumstances previously mentioned earlier, and they move into a house that is already infested.  It is at this point where the demon attaches itself to the person or family.  There are another type of people who attract spirits too.  These people are categorized as "Hyper Sensitive" or psychic.  People who possess the ability to communicate with spirits can often times become victims of those spirits.  People with these abilities often time become obsessed with them and recklessly commune with spirits inadvertently attracting a demonic spirit.   These people should be identified and understand the uniqueness of their gift/curse.  Remember that God says in the book of Deuteronomy that communicating with the dead is an abomination unto God.
